ISSUE II/IV, August 2002:
REPORT FROM MELBOURNE

Dragi prijatelji / Dear friends,

The Institute is pleased to announce the launch of Galeria Sloveniana, the online gallery of Contemporary Slovenian Art.The gallery is located on the Thezaurus web site.

Galeria Sloveniana

This online gallery is a significant and exciting new enterprise initiated by the Institute. It provides the opportunity to artists of Slovenian background based anywhere in the world to present their work to the world community.

It will showcase the works of emerging and established artists and stimulate the exploration of the Slovenian identity through art.

The aim of the gallery is to create a new cultural space, thus facilitating cultural dialogue. In the context of the Australian scene the gallery is unique.

The gallery is one of the ISSV cultural programmes and fulfills the Institute's objective to present Slovenian culture globally. The concept of this online gallery was developed by the Creative director of ISSV, Chiron Morpheus.

July Launch of the Online Art Exhibition

We take this opportunity to announce the first online art exhibition by Australian Slovenian artists based in Victoria. The majority of the works presented online were part of the exhibition held in Melbourne on 6 July, at the Slovenian Religious and Cultural Centre.

Marie Plut, the artistic advisor of the exhibition, has written an introductory article about the exhibition Slovenian Art in Australia about the array of qualities of the works exhibited.

Australian Slovenian Visual Art Exhibition - 6 July 2002

The exhibition was officially opened in Melbourne, on the 6 July, at the Slovenian Religious and Cultural Centre, SS Cyril and Methodius on the occasion of the Feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

The exhibited works are by well-known Victorian artists of Slovenian background. Among them are painters who exhibit their work in Australia and overseas. The curator was Ivo Leber, who took an exhibition of Australian Slovenian artists to Slovenia, Italy and Austria several years ago.

Thematically, the exhibition reflects the Slovenian background of the painters. Dominant are Slovenian and Australian landscapes and Slovenian cultural and religious themes. There are also beautifully crafted still lifes painted in oil or acrylic. Prominent among the exhibited works are three striking large canvases of Zorka Cernjak, on the theme of her own childhood experience of Slovenian fairy-tale motifs, painted in a sophisticated naïve style. The beautiful mosaics of Lojze Jeric, executed in glass mosaics and natural stone attracted great interest.

Celebrating 25 years of Slovenian Language Teaching in Australia (1977 - 2002)

This year is the twenty-fifth anniversary since we introduced Slovenian language in Melbourne as an accredited subject in the Australian state school system. The year 1977 is of historical note because it was the first time that the Slovenian language was taught as an accredited school subject beyond the immediate border countries of Slovenia (in recent years Canada has included Slovenian as part of the standard school curriculum).

Since 1977 Slovenian language classes have been held continuously as an optional secondary school subject at all levels in metropolitan Melbourne. Slovenian language is offered as a school subject from years 6 to year 12, at the Princess Hill Secondary College, in Melbourne.

The assessment results of the final year 12 contribute to the score for university entrance.
For this anniversary, a very festive public celebration is planned on 6 October. It will be held at the Slovenian Religious and Cultural Centre, Melbourne. There will also be a display of documents, publications, students' work, photographs and language projects of ISSV.
