she with tin legs
hourglass in mouth aquarium in her head
he with all the towns staircases on his back
under his arm a heart that can be wound up or
stopped
they open a book and look for a road
to water sky and blossoming grove
where there’s no sweating paper no fumbling eyes
where like in a B picture pretty birds twitter
she opens her legs unlocks the aquarium
starts hunting for fish
he climbs the stairs and winds his heart up
nude bodies drown in sand from the hourglass
fish flick through their veins
with dark designs concealed in their bloody gills
Veno Taufer
(1933 - ) A poet, essayist, translator who graduated in comparative literature from the University of Ljubljana. Editor of the literary magazine Review 57 (Revija 57) until it was banned in 1959, Taufer was also a manager of the experimental theatre group Oder 57. For many years he worked as a journalist (BBC-London; Ljubljana) before founding and directing the International Literary Festival Vilenica in the early 80's. Taufer's translations of T.S.Eliot, Wallace Stevens and Ted Hughes were met with high acclaim. His poetry represents a linguistic turn in modernist poetry and was, with its cross referenced structure and explorations of linguistic possibilities, a harbinger of postmodernist writing in Slovenian literature. In 1996, Taufer won the Prešeren Prize for lifetime achievement and in 1995 he was awarded a prestigious international Central European Award in Vienna. Taufer has published 14 poetry collections and numerous theatre reviews.By the same author
