Mission

Promotion, establishment and maintenance of Slovenian language and culture, principally through the medium of technology assisted learning, to benefit the descendants of Slovenian immigrants and the broader English-speaking community.

Development of the web node www.thezaurus.com as a vehicle for the study of Slovenian language and culture.

About ISSV Institute for Slovenian Studies of Victoria Inc. was established in Melbourne in response to the new challenges and exciting possibilities presented by Information Technology. The development of web-based and interactive learning technologies had a far-reaching effect on our approach to Slovenian language education. We took up the challenge with a broadened definition of membership, and used web technology to provide immediate access to language and cultural resources, and the capacity for communication. A major project was to develop online language courses for several levels using interactive technology.

In 1998 the ISSV, as one of Victoria's language associations, received funding from the Department of Education, Training and Employment of Victoria to develop Slovenianlinx, web pages for the use of the teachers and students of Slovenian.

Three ISSV members undertook the project of creating the web site: Aleksandra Ceferin, Chiron Morpheus and Sandi Ceferin. The team had the combined expertise of language teaching methodology, course development, classroom teaching, web design and web development. We regarded the Internet as the ideal medium for the creation of a Slovenian web site as a "collective memory" of Slovenes in Diaspora.

The web site was named Thezaurus - treasury or collection to reflect the concept of a web library for Slovenian studies. We developed it far beyond its initial intended function as a teaching and communication tool for a small group of teachers and students in Victoria, into the broader role of cultural and language archives for the dispersed community of the second and third generation descendants of Slovenian emigrants and at the same time to inform the broader world community.

About Thezaurus Thezaurus.com is the main project of the Institute for Slovenian Studies of Victoria Inc., the foundation stone and the pivot for its activities. It has been conceived by web developer Chiron Morpheus as a web node - a web destination point for conceptually selected and organized sources, links and contents, selected for the purpose and needs of Slovenian studies and a broader presentation of Slovenia, its culture, its language and its people.

Thezaurus was developed in 1998 and launched on the Web ion 1 January 1999 as www.thezaurus.com . It has been developed since then as a vehicle for the major projects and activities of the "Institute for Slovenian Studies of Victoria".
The web node now contains a growing body of over 300 pages of cultural and language archives, Slovenian Language Resources, Webzine, Webclassroom, Careerlinx/ Slovenian Connections, Galeria Sloveniana - an online gallery of Slovenian Australian artists, Thezaurus Forums and a comprehensive selection of general and linguistic links. The first stage of Literator, the archive of contemporary Slovenian literature in English translation has been completed.
