The Royal Necropolis was used for burial for a time, from the 18th until the end of 20th dynasty. The pillaging of the treasures could not be controlled, and the place was abandoned. Today the tombs offer a wealth of knowledge about the lives and beliefs of these ancient people and their civilization.
