France Gorše, Slovenian sculptor

France Gorše was born in Dolenjska/Lower Carniola in the village Sodražica, in 1897. He studied in Ljubljana, fought on the Italian Front in World War I, and after the war went to Zagreb where where he studied sculpture with Ivan Meštrović. Back in Ljubljana he soon became known for a growing opus of work. He migrated to USA in 1952, by 1970 returned to Europe, constantly developed new ways of expression in his work. He finally settled in Slovenian Koroška/Carynthia, in the village Sveče, where he worked till his death in 1986. He built a studio and gallery, and so created a monument to his creative genius. Just before he passed away, a retrospective of his works was organized in Ljubljana. Its success confirmed his standing as a Slovenian sculptor of note.

Galeria Sloveniana

Galeria Sloveniana is the online gallery of Slovenian art. The primary role of the gallery is to present and document the works of contemporary artists of Slovenian descent.

The main theme of the gallery is the exploration of common denominators constituting Slovenian art. The gallery is giving the opportunity to emerging and developing artists to present their work to the global community and stimulate exploration of the Slovenian identity through art.

The word "Sloveniana" represents the idea of Slovenian art. It literally means a selection of cultural objects and memorabilia specific for a definite period or space, in this case, cultural icons associated with Slovenia. We are familiar with the usage in words such as Australiana or Victoriana (suffix - iana taken from Latin). This name links the Slovenianness of cultural life to generally known concepts, and at the same time lends exhibitions meaning and direction. The term provides visibility and recognition of Slovenian identity and heritage in the multicultural mosaic of the modern world.
