Jože Plečnik - Church of St.Francis of Assisi, Ljubljana
The Church of St.Francis of Assisi in Šiška, Ljubljana was commissioned by the Franciscan Brothers, and completed, the church in 1928, the the bell tower in 1931. It is of bold and quite stunning design, creating a wide open space full of light, regarded at the time by many as too far from the Catholic tradition. It was Plečnik's first major project that inaugurated his plans for Ljubljana. With this grandiose and astonishing building, the architect introduced into Ljubljana a new set of dimensions and a new standard of building on a grand scale. It amazed the city and created some resistance. It also started the most extraordinary and fertile period of creativity and realization of plans. It was the beginning of the "urban planning phenomenon" that is Plečnik's Ljubljana.
