The collection of over 100 sculptures in the Open Air Gallery in Kostanjevica, Slovenia arose out of the International Symposiums of Sculptors called Forma viva, an initiative of Slovenian sculptors Jakob Savinšek and Janez Lenassi. Modelled on the symposium held in St Margharethen (Austria, 1959), the first two symposia were organised in Kostanjevica na Krki (local oak-wood) and in Seča near Portorož (stone) in 1961. Two other venues followed later: Ravne na Koroškem (1964, steel) and Maribor (1967, reinforced concrete). This project of sculpture in the open-air has involved sculptors from all over the world. There are now altogether over 300 sculptures.

Galeria Sloveniana

Galeria Sloveniana is the online gallery of Slovenian art. The primary role of the gallery is to present and document the works of contemporary artists of Slovenian descent.

The main theme of the gallery is the exploration of common denominators constituting Slovenian art. The gallery is giving the opportunity to emerging and developing artists to present their work to the global community and stimulate exploration of the Slovenian identity through art.

The word "Sloveniana" represents the idea of Slovenian art. It literally means a selection of cultural objects and memorabilia specific for a definite period or space, in this case, cultural icons associated with Slovenia. We are familiar with the usage in words such as Australiana or Victoriana (suffix - iana taken from Latin). This name links the Slovenianness of cultural life to generally known concepts, and at the same time lends exhibitions meaning and direction. The term provides visibility and recognition of Slovenian identity and heritage in the multicultural mosaic of the modern world.
