Australian premiere of Slovene Emigrant Handicrafts Archives

The Australian launch of the Online Archive of Slovenian Emigrant Handicrafts in Victoria will take place at the Opening of the 11th Slovenian Festival at the club Jadran on Saturday, 1 March 2008.

It will be the first official presentation of the Handicrafts online exhibition and the website http://www.rocnadela.org, will be presented by Aleksandra Ceferin. The Australian premiere was kindly sponsored by the Victorian Multicultural Commission.

The online archive of Slovenian handicrafts lays the foundation for further research, collection activity and archiving of Slovenian handicrafts in Australia and elsewhere. The exhibition is based on the collection of handicraft exhibits produced by Australian Slovenes of Victoria, and is a collaborative effort by Daša Koprivec, Senior Curator at Slovenian Ethnographic Museum and Aleksandra Ceferin, President the Institute for Slovenian Studies of Victoria Inc. The project was sponsored in 2006 by the Office for Slovenes Abroad and the Ministry for Culture of the Republic of Slovenia.

The website http://www.rocnadela.org, designed and developed by Zavod Neuropolis, is the first online exhibition of Slovenian handicrafts by the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum, and ground-breaking by world standards. It is also the first project of its kind, and the first joint project between Australia and Slovenia. A major exhibition of Slovenian handicrafts is being planned to take place in 2009, possibly in the Immigration Museum Victoria There will be an official launch in Ljubljana later in 2008.

About Aleksandra Ceferin

Aleksandra Ceferin (M.A., B.A., Dip.Ed.) has introduced Slovenian language as a school subject in Australian school system and founded the Slovenian Teachers' Association of Victoria in 1976. She has extensive experience in language education: as teacher, lecturer, curriculum coordinator, course writer, language consultant and manager, VCE State Reviewer and Chief Examiner. Since 1998 she has been the President of ISSV and the manager and chief editor of its projects. Aleksandra visits Slovenian annually, establishing and maintaining contacts with Slovenia, and initiating exchanges and cooperation between organizations. In 2004 she was the recipient of the National Education Award of RS Slovenia.
